Summary
Imagine a workplace where every research request you receive takes into account what your organization already knows. Product teams have the answers to common UX questions at their fingertips, and finding insights has become second nature to everyone. You rarely wonder whether the insights you find are still true because other researchers are always adding new evidence that supports them. In this session we discuss HITS, the human insight library Microsoft uses internally to achieve these goals, and the culture we’ve been working to develop around its use.
Key Insights
-
•
Hits prioritizes indexing individual research insights and observations rather than entire reports to enable instant, precise knowledge retrieval.
-
•
Durable or timeless research knowledge means capturing insights that remain relevant across product iterations and organizational changes.
-
•
Democratizing access to detailed research data helps prevent misuse by enabling community fact-checking and transparency.
-
•
Hits supports a layered knowledge model: raw data, information (study reports), knowledge (insights), and wisdom (recommendations).
-
•
The system automatically tracks cross-references to insights, building a living body of evidence that evolves as new studies emerge.
-
•
Hits is used by a broad range of roles in Microsoft including researchers, designers, and product managers, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration.
-
•
Balancing structured, template-driven input with flexibility for diverse research types (e.g., data science, generative research) is a critical design challenge.
-
•
Embedding multimedia like interview clips and videos within Hits reports enriches the evidence while enabling export to presentations.
-
•
Community features, such as following researchers and discussions around insights, are planned to enhance social engagement and knowledge sharing.
-
•
The creation and scaling of Hits required significant technical investment and cultural adaptation, but provides strong network effects as more users engage.
